Ear Infections, Antibiotics, and the Perfect Storm
If your child has had more ear infections than you can count, you already know how exhausting the cycle can become.
Another cold rolls through.
A few days later, they’re miserable, tugging at their ear, waking up crying, and you’re back at the pediatrician’s office.
Another infection. Another round of antibiotics. Another few weeks of wondering when it will happen again.
Maybe you’ve already been referred to an ENT. Maybe ear tubes have been brought up. Maybe you’re simply tired of feeling like you’re constantly waiting for the next infection to hit.
At some point, many parents start asking a bigger question:
Why does this keep happening?
At Rooted Wellness Chiropractic, that question matters.
Because when a child is dealing with recurring ear infections over and over again, we want to look beyond the latest infection and understand what may be contributing to the pattern underneath it.
A Story Many Parents Can Relate To
Before finding Neurologically Focused Chiropractic Care, Luca had five ear infections in just four months.
Every illness seemed to turn into another ear infection.
He had been on repeated rounds of antibiotics, was waking in the middle of the night screaming in pain, and even when one infection cleared, another seemed to be right around the corner.
Eventually, his pediatrician referred him to an ENT to discuss tubes.
But Luca’s mom couldn’t shake the feeling that there had to be more to the story.
When his nervous system was evaluated with INSiGHT scans, she was finally able to see that his body was carrying a significant amount of neurological stress.
For his family, that changed the conversation.
Why We Look at the Upper Neck
The upper neck is an incredibly important area in a developing child’s nervous system.
The top portion of the cervical spine sits close to the brainstem and is surrounded by nerves, muscles, lymphatic structures, and tissues that play a role in how the head, neck, ears, and sinuses function together.
That is one reason we pay close attention to a child’s early physical history.
Birth itself is a major physical event.
For some babies, that experience may also include induction, long labor, very fast labor, C-section delivery, forceps, vacuum extraction, malpositioning, or other interventions that place additional stress on the head and neck.
Over time, that physical stress may contribute to what we call subluxation, or areas of neurospinal tension and dysfunction that can interfere with how efficiently the nervous system adapts and coordinates the body.
And when a child is already struggling with regulation, drainage, or immune resilience, repeated ear infections can become part of that bigger picture.
Drainage Matters
The middle ear has to be able to drain properly.
In young children, those drainage pathways are smaller and positioned differently than they are in adults, which is one reason kids are already more prone to fluid buildup.
But movement and neurological function also matter.
When there is significant tension or restricted motion through the upper neck, the muscles and tissues involved in normal drainage may not be working as efficiently as they should.
That can make it easier for fluid to remain trapped behind the eardrum.
And when fluid sits there, it can become the perfect environment for another infection to develop.
So while the infection itself gets most of the attention, we also want to ask:
Why is the fluid having such a hard time clearing in the first place?
The Nervous System and Immune Resilience
The nervous system and immune system are constantly communicating.
Your child’s nervous system helps coordinate the body’s response to stress, illness, inflammation, sleep, digestion, and recovery.
When a child’s system is repeatedly stuck in a high-stress or sympathetic state, they may have a harder time shifting into the rest, repair, and recovery side of the nervous system.
That doesn’t mean every ear infection comes from nervous system dysfunction.
But when infections are happening again and again, we believe it is worth looking at how well the child’s body is adapting as a whole.
For many of the kids we see at Rooted Wellness Chiropractic, ear infections are not the only thing going on.
Parents may also mention:
- Poor sleep
- Reflux or digestive struggles
- Constipation
- Sensory sensitivities
- Frequent illnesses
- Difficulty calming down
- Chronic congestion
- Trouble adapting to transitions
- Other signs of nervous system dysregulation
When several of those patterns show up together, we start thinking less about one isolated ear and more about the child’s entire neurological story.
Where Antibiotics Fit
This is often the hardest part for parents to hear, because antibiotics feel like the obvious answer. But research dating back to the 1980s shows antibiotics aren’t very effective for most ear, sinus, and respiratory infections — largely because most of these infections are viral, and antibiotics simply can’t touch a virus.
Antibiotics are also the leading cause of emergency department visits for pediatric adverse drug events, and early antibiotic use — especially within the first 12 months of life — has been linked to a higher risk of behavioral difficulties later on. It’s telling that even the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends a “watch and wait” approach for most uncomplicated cases.
None of this means antibiotics are never appropriate. It means they were never designed to solve the underlying problem — the drainage and immune dysfunction driving the infections in the first place.
The Perfect Storm
Here’s where it gets even more important to pay attention. Ear tube surgery is performed over 700,000 times a year in the U.S., at a cost of $2 billion. Tubes can force short-term drainage, but they don’t address the underlying kink in the system.
So often, the fluid simply finds a new route. It shifts next to the tonsils, adenoids, sinuses, and throat. More infections lead to more antibiotics, and often to tonsil and adenoid removal. And the fluid keeps moving “south,” into the lungs — where what started as ear infections can eventually show up as asthma and allergies.
This is what we call The Perfect Storm: one unresolved root cause, working its way through your child’s body, showing up as a different diagnosis at every stage.
How We Look Deeper at Rooted Wellness Chiropractic
At Rooted Wellness Chiropractic, we use INSiGHT neurological scans to help us better understand how a child’s nervous system is functioning.
These scans allow us to look at patterns of neurological stress and regulation rather than relying only on symptoms.
We want an objective starting point.
Because as we say often in our office:
You can’t claim to change what you’re not measuring.
Once we understand what a child’s nervous system is showing us, Dr. Sarah creates an individualized care plan using gentle, specific neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments.
The goal is to reduce neurospinal stress, improve adaptability, and support the body’s natural ability to regulate, recover, and function more efficiently.
For children dealing with recurring ear infections, parents often come to us hoping to support things like:
- Better drainage
- Fewer recurring infections
- Improved sleep
- Stronger overall resilience
- Better nervous system regulation
And rather than waiting for the next infection to happen, we can begin supporting the foundation underneath the pattern.
You Don’t Have to Keep Waiting for the Next Ear Infection
When your child has been through infection after infection, it can start to feel like this is simply what childhood is going to look like.
But recurring patterns deserve questions.
Why does every cold seem to settle in the ears?
Why does fluid keep building back up?
Why does your child seem to have such a hard time fully recovering before the next illness comes along?
At Rooted Wellness Chiropractic in Mansfield, Texas, we help families look at those questions through a neurological lens.
If your child is dealing with recurring ear infections, repeated antibiotic use, chronic congestion, or an upcoming ENT referral, we would love to help you better understand what their nervous system may be showing you.
Reach out to Rooted Wellness Chiropractic to schedule your child’s neurological assessment and INSiGHT scans.
Because instead of simply waiting for the next infection, sometimes it’s time to look at the pattern underneath it.
